The Depot - Restaurant of the Year

It is not a secret to our friends and family that our favorite restaurant happens to be just across the street. In fact, MR Data Corp has it's main office in the little house behind The Depot owned by Mike and Nancy. We can smell the daily preparations and happily share the building that also houses their administrative office upstairs. The Depot is our town center! From Brett's window vantage point... he can see the neighbors, tourists and beach traffic. We NEVER miss the Burger Night and always look forward to the gourmet menu on weekends. Our daughter, Paris works there when she is home from Michigan, Madison can always be found at the bar enjoying a Guinness during his visits home and Aura has been known to peel potatoes and cut up onions before she moved to Morocco. If you read this blog..you know I mention life at The Depot all the time.We are very happy to announce that The Depot was chosen "Restaurant of the Year" by the local critic. The article follows. Here is the link to The Depot web site.

The Depot
1208 38th Place, Seaview, Wash.(360) 642-7880

The Columbia-Pacific region’s top restaurants could hold their own anywhere, and The Depot, so-called because it’s housed in a former railway station, is no exception to this dictum. What was already a fine dining venue got even better when Michael Lalewicz, a Western Culinary Institute grad, and wife Nancy Gorshe, a health professional, assumed ownership in early 2003. They spruced up the interior, improved the wine list, stabilized the menu and eliminated the fussiness, yet maintained The Depot’s fun quotient, always a high point.Internationally oriented, upscale bistro fare is how Lalewicz characterizes his cooking, but the food here defies categorization. Just call it reliable and rock-solid, ’cause Lalewicz and sous chef Cleveland Graham resist outrageous fusion in favor of proven preparations. They’re focused on purveying lively, unpretentious fare such as fried Willapa oysters, Clam Tide Railroad Chowder and signature house salad greens gussied up with candied walnuts, chopped pears and blue cheese. Entrees run the gamut from coconut prawns and gorgonzola gnocchi to tandoori chicken and pistachio-crusted lamb chops. Wednesday Burger Nights are the region’s foremost Bacchanalian feasts, and desserts are always a pleasantly sweet surprise. $$

Saren's Lego Robotics Team is going to Nationals!

My niece, Saren, is a grade schooler and is very smart, talented and beautiful. She participates in a Lego Robotics Team that just won the State competition. In April, they compete at Nationals in Atlanta! Her parents gave us the report.

"First away the robot achieved a perfect score of 400 in it's morning run, (one of two...nationwide to date) which made the rest of the day a bit more relaxed. (The best of two runs count as 1/3 of the overall score.) The Research Project Presentation and Teamwork count for the other 2/3rds.

The mid-day research project presentation skit was preformed with no lines forgotten. Saren was a dying crab and her gasps for air was very cute. The afternoon second run scored 325...still above average.

After the second run, the kids returned to waiting/pit area, pulled out the robot and tools and opened themselves and the robot up for all the other teams to come and ask questions. Not something usually done by any team nor was it anything the coaches had known they were doing or were going to do. Several teams came over to see and chat about the "bot" that scored 400. "

29 days and counting....

Constant record breaking downpour. This is not the light on again/off again rain either.

If you look closely...you will see a large coil of irrigation pipe... along the trees of the driveway. Brett set up a temporary water fix until we can dig a trench.

In case of fire, use the stairs.

This photo deserves some explanation. Taken with cell phone... we are in Lynnwood, north of Seattle. Brett is here for meetings and I came along for company, to pick up Madison's vehicle at the airport parking and to enjoy running water in a cozy nice room at The Embassy Suites.

So..here I am watching the Seahawks game. See the laptop at bottom of photo. Last night the fire alarm went off (1:30am). no fire..but some sprinklers did go off. Long night and long story...but a guy jumped from 3rd floor. No one knows why. We all watched and could not believe it. He died. No one has slept... the cleaning crews are sucking up the water, the alarm kept going off...and by the way, the bathtub was too icky to bathe in. Needless to say, yup...they reduced our bill. We cant wait to drive 5 or 6 hours home via road detours (still raining, mudslides and flooding) to our quiet little house in Seaview.

25 days straight of rain! Plus wind and high surf advisory.

The flooding is NOT from our water leak. Our water is shut off. We are waiting for the utility locator to come and mark the buried lines...but even if we did dig... the water table is too high to do much. We will likely do an above ground fix until the rains stop.

All kids have now left the nest to return to their lives of work and school. Wish they were here to help us dig! Posted by Picasa

Water, Water Everywhere

Not only has it rained record amounts!!!.... we have a huge lake with ducks swimming in the yard.

Brett discovered (the water bill came) that we have a serious leak in the line. No...not from the voluminous amount of laundry from the kids visiting for the Holidays... but it seems to be somewhere in the 200 feet from the flag pole to the street. (no wonder we have a new lake!) This week we will be digging the line up and figuring out a fix.

Our buckets holding water from the leaky (now repaired) roof...are replaced with water to use since the water is turned off. Aura would have felt like she was still in Morocco. Posted by Picasa

Playing with fire. Michael instructs her how to "cook with gas"!
