Last week's storm

Last Monday, we had Hurricane force winds with gusts of 99 mph. The power went out and trees and fences blew down.

We lost our fence and a tree. All that fall cleanup means nothing now. The Koi pond is filled with tree limbs, pine needles and unhappy fish. One of the driveway trees fell over to the Sou'wester's RV lot- thankfully no campers. It took out the feeder electrical wire.

Since the house is primarily heated with our fireplace insert- we were warm. I cooked on the insert top and the storm passed by late afternoon. A trip around the neighborhood shows more fences and trees down. We have a lot of cleanup to do.

Recycling Electronics

We had a storage unit in Kirkland FULL of electronics- even an old 'reel to reel' and 300 pound servers. I rented a UHAUL van and waited for some Seahawk guys to beg for help loading the heavy items. (yes, they store at the same place). It was very difficult- but eventually the entire storage unit was recycled.

Special thanks to Natalie who let me stay at her place while working on this project. I also made many trips to the paper recycling with hundreds of boxes of old files. After 13 years, I said goodbye to the storage place. That felt good!

Really Late Birthday Shout-Outs

I have been remiss on updating the blog these past few months. Just when I think there is a brief time of respite- projects have a way of interferring.

So here are some late Happy Birthday Salutes.
1. Madison- our oldest, turned 24 this September. I searched for a photo and found one with him and his favorite little 'work crew' truck. (Grandpa was spraying water on him that day.)
hhhmmm... CREW.... I think it must have had a subliminal effect on him because he grew up to be CREW for big performers. He is currently under contract with "The Boss"... Crew Chief with the video crew. I still remember the day that I came to terms with the fact that my little physics prodigy was not going to MIT. Rock 'n Roll has better toys. This past year he purchased a loft in the Pearl District of Portland, Oregon- but he has only slept there a handful of nights. He is in a serious relationship with a great gal.... and he still seeks Mom's counsel-which gives my heart a warm feeling.

The next Birthday Greeting is for Vianna.
When I was in High School- she married my Dad and stepped into the role of Mother for a head strong independent and determined young woman. I remember feeling extreme happiness that I could think about heading to college back east- and I remember feeling all that teen girl angst about another woman in my house. I am the oldest of 4 and you can only imagine that God has the ultimate sense of humor when I became a step-mother to teenagers.... well, I finally understood. This photo was taken when she was 6.

Birthday Happiness #3 is for our youngest, Paris.
Though she moved into my house and arms the morning after her father proposed marriage (yeah! can we move in before Dad?).... We made it official a year ago on our Wedding Anniversary.... I formally adopted her. Paris turned 22 this year. I can still remember the day she knocked on our door and asked to play with Aura. Over the years, the girls plotted and schemed to become sisters. (Parent Trap is a favorite movie for our family.) Paris is attending Northern Michigan University on a partial athletic scholarship (pole vault and javelin)..but her merit scholarship is what makes me most proud. Paris has given me many unique of experiences. I was not athletic as a child and found myself a 'soccer (volleyball) mom. Many weekends of sitting in gyms at tournaments, driving hours across town for team practice, flying across the country for more volleyball too! Paris has discovered the importance of feet. Her plan is to attend Podiatry Medical School next.

Birthday Wishes #4 go to our second son- Ryan.
Ryan was 15 when I married his father. We only had a few short years together before he left home and ended up on the east coast where he has a wife and 2 adorable little girls. We miss him terribly and wish he would come visit. Ryan's birthday is extra special for us because that is the day Brett gathered the courage to propose marriage and join families.

Busy, Busy

I know there are many activities to catch up on with Blogging...
Just a few to watch for:
Madison turned 24 (he is out on tour with Bruce Springsteen)
Vi turned- well- gosh... I guess I can't exactly broadcast that one. But I have a cute photo circa 1930s to post. She was a pre-teen.
The highway beautification project is in progress (see photo). Brett and I are in the middle. (the weather here is awful!)

A number of political dinners. Today I am on my way to Seattle to meet Sonny Perdue- the Governor of Georgia.

The BIG NEWS is that Aura was selected to attend Marine Officers School in Quantico. More on that to follow....

gotta run- to Aberdeen for a PR meeting with Coastal Community Action Program.

Rod Run to the End of the World

Every September, the weekend after Labor Day, the Long Beach Peninsula's car club- Beach Barrons- host the 'Rod Run to the End of the World'. Over 100,000 people descend upon us with their muscle cars- or to view the muscle cars.

The sound of the engines drown out the ocean waves. For 3 days we hear cars. Blissfully, the middle of Saturday is quiet- since all are at the Beach Barron Show Grounds up near Moby Dick in Ocean Park.

The early arrivers come Wednesday and Thursday. By Friday- every piece of real estate (vacant or occupied) along Highway 103 becomes an impromptu show ground or a stadium to hang around (beer in hand) and wave at the cars parading up the local highway. This scene repeats itself the entire 12 miles up to Ocean Park.

Brett and I took his 59 Ford to view some action. We also noticed this vintage 'Sheriff' vehicle camping at the Sou'wester next door.

Aura's new car

We are keeping our insurance agent busy! Aura purchased a car this week. She went to Bruce Smith Autos in Seaside- where Madison had also purchased his rig.

Bruce gives a can of SPAM with every purchase! We enjoy Bruce and highly recommend him.

Christmas in stores- and it is only the first of September!

The world is topsy turvy. 08 Presidential elections already! Now there are Christmas decorations in the stores. I was soooo overwhelmed that I immediately left the store and went home to make 'to do lists'. Panic is setting in.

Our home is on the Christmas Home Tour this year- and I can't believe I only have 12 weeks to be ready. yikes!

Paris' new car

Paris got a nice new (to her) car. It should last thru her final year at Northern Michigan and into Podiatry School. She started the 'senior year blog' which can be seen at:

Final Labor Day photos with girls

Here are the final photos from Labor Day weekend. Kimberly came out to join the girls for a last weekend before school started.

McKenzie and Brooke were very excited to see their Mom and the dog- Molly. I think Molly was a nervous wreck with the girls gone- wondering what became of them. She chewed a 'hot spot' and Kimberly had to get medication and a collar for her. Once she got to our house, our cat made her life even more miserable... so poor Molly was chewing down to the bone! Molly's own cats at home are friendly and cuddly with her.

We had plenty of seafood... crab, oysters, clams. The next day we made oysters rockefeller.

Kimberly has called to report that school is good and the girls are back in their routine.

Fresh Crab

These crabbers take fresh crab very seriously. They set up a fire off the boat ramp in Ilwaco at Cape Disappointment.

Best Day of Summer- at Waikiki Beach in Ilwaco

Wednesday was the best day of the summer. We got lucky and spent it at Waikiki Beach- which is really in the Columbia River- but at the mouth so there is plenty of salt water wave action.
There are really short videos to watch ... see last photos.

Scouting ahead for the trip to Waikiki at Cape Disappointment

We made an advance scouting trip to check out Waikiki Beach. We walked on the driftwood, rocks, went out on the north jetty and the girls spotted a bloated dead Sea Lion.

Today we are packing a lunch, sand toys, towels and books for a long day playing in the surf and sand.

Kayaking by Bike

A rather interesting elderly man bikes around the area with his 2 kayaks. I suppose it makes sense. Wikipedia defines a kayak as a 'small human powered boat'. This man must take the 'human powered' part seriously and therefore use his bike too.

What makes it double interesting is his attire (kind of nutty professor/homeless person). I think he carries most of his possessions in the large basket on the bike. But I noticed some wrapped picture frames... very curious.

Notice, he has the sit above Kayak for Ocean and the nicer fresh water Kayak for the River.

Back at the Beach and Sea Lions in Astoria

We picked up McKenzie and Brooke and headed out to the beach for the last week before school starts. Their mother will arrive Thursday night.

Near the Safeway store in Astoria- the Sea Lions are a fun stop.
